Other types include a motion detector that you plug into a regular wall outlet.  You can leave it plugged in and turn it on before you go to bed or when you leave for the day.   These units are less expensive than a tradition burglar alarm.  You aren’t paying for a monitoring company.  Monitoring companies have the added expense of hiring technicians and paying for vehicles and warehouse space. 

Sometimes even the appearance of a DIY burglar alarms is enough to deter a criminal from targeting your home or property.  If you are willing to take the risk your device doesn’t even need to be activated.  In fact, it doesn’t even need to be real.  You can find something that looks enough like a DIY burglar alarms and attach it in a visible spot in a door or window.  That is a very basic DIY burglar alarm. 

The downside to simple DIY burglar alarms is false alarms.  If the unit you choose works off of air pressure or sound waves loud noises or the slamming of a door can trigger the alarm.  Also because these units are self contained a burglar can spot them and remove them before they have a change to alarm. 

Another downside to a DIY burglar alarm is your devices aren’t attached to a monitoring company.  If an alarm is triggered while you aren’t home, the burglar can simply unplug or destroy the alarm before anyone is notified.  One of the services you pay for with a monthly monitoring contract is that your equipment is monitored 24/7.  When an alarm is tripped the monitoring company contacts the proper authorities. 

There are companies available that allow you to install your own equipment and provide monitoring.  That way you are still protected even when you aren’t home.  This is also more cost effective for you and the company.  The company doesn’t have to spend money on technicians.  You don’t have to pay high installation fees.  Because the equipment is a DIY burglar alarm the equipment is wireless for convenience.  This makes for simple installation.  It also means no drilling to mount equipment.
